Lateef Kayode Pursues 15th KO, 16th Win Without a Loss

Nigerian-born cruiser weight (200 pounds) Lateef Kayode (pictured above, at left) will pursue his 15th knockout and his 16th victory without a loss during Friday night’s Showtime televised bout opposite Nicholas Iannuzzi (pictured above, at right) of Tampa, Fla., at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

In the 10-round main event, 29-year-old Cuban Olympian and featherweight (126 pounds) Luis Franco (8-0, five KOs) of Miami takes a major step up in class when he faces southpaw Leonilo Miranda (32-2, 30 KOs) of Mexico.

Nicknamed, “Power,” Kayode, who will turn 28 in March, has gone as much as four rounds five times in his career, including an August, eighth-round knockout of Alfredo Escalera. Jr., an October sixth-round stoppage of Epifanio Mendoza, and December’s sixth-round stoppage of Ed Perry in his last fight.

Kayode has stopped 14 straight opponents since his lone route-going effort, a four-round unanimous decision over Mike Miller in his professional debut in August of 2008.

“He’s doing very well. We just finished another workout today,” said five-time Trainer of The Year, Freddie Roach, who handles Kayode, earlier this week. “He’s getting better and better all the time, but he’s still young. He’s only got 16 fights, but he’s getting better all the time.”

Kayode shares Roach with a talented group that includes eight-division titlist and WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao, WBA junior welterweight (140 pounds) titlist Amir Khan, middleweight (160 pounds) prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and unbeaten rising junior middleweight (154 pounds) star Vanes Martirosyan.
