On Sunday at the American Sports University in San Bernardina, Calif., southpaw WBC middleweight (160 pounds) titlist Sergio Martinez (26-2-2, 25 KOs) will be honored by the WBC Legends Of Boxing Museum as the Fighter of the Year.
On Nov. 20 in Atlantic City, N.J., the 35-year-old Martinez used a single left hook to knock out Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) in the second-round of an HBO televised clash that avenged a December, majority decision loss during which both southpaw fighters were down in the first round.
Williams was rated No. 3 in most pound-for-pound lists behind six-time titlist Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) and eight-division champ Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), who is the current WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion. Pacquiao is promoted by Top Rank Promotions, and Mayweather has been promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
That victory was preceded by an April, unanimous decision win that dethroned Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs) as WBC king.
