Former IBF junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion Fernando Vargas told FanHouse that he expects to become the first fighter with a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars on Jan. 28, even as the 33-year-old could end a more than three-year ring absence should he emerge from retirement in March.

In a ceremony that is planned for the Encore Las Vegas Hotel-Casino, Vargas (26-5, 22 knockouts) will have a star will be placed that day somewhere on the Las Vegas Strip alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

Stars have also been approved for Oscar De La Hoya and eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao, who holds the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) belts.

Vargas was 15-0 with as many knockouts when he stopped Yory Boy Campos in the seventh round for the IBF belt on Dec. 12 of 1998 — five days after his 21st birthday. Vargas made five title defenses, three of them by knockout, among them decisions over world titlists Winky Wright, and, Ike Quartey, respectively, in December of 1999, and, April of 2000.

At 20-0, with 18 stoppages in December of 200, Vargas lost for the first time, being dethroned by 14th round against then-unbeaten Felix Trinidad. Vargas also suffered defeat against De La Hoya by 11th-round stoppage in September of 2002, and has lost his past three bouts against three-division, five-time titlist Shane Mosley by knockouts in the 10th and sixth rounds in February and July of 2006, and, the last by majority decision against two-time welterweight champ, Ricardo Mayorga, in November of 2007.

Welcome back, did you check out this awesome street fighting program, it rocks

From the Philippines, where he was celebrating his 32nd birthday on Dec. 17, eight-division king Manny Pacquiao had a message for troubled boxer, Floyd Mayweather. Jr.: Take care of your legal problems and fight.

“He’s facing so many problems,” Pacquiao told local television news organization TV Patrol, according to Mark Vester of BoxingScene.com. “I hope he solves them soon so he could go back to the ring.”

Mayweather was arrested on Friday in connection with being a recent target of a Dec. 8, outstanding arrest warrant on a misdemeanor battery complaint alleging that he poked a security guard in the face several times, and requiring that Mayweather to turn himself in or face arrest at any time.

If convicted Mayweather faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $ 1000 fine. Mayweather reportedly still is in custody.
