FanHouse Trainer of the Year, Gabriel Sermiento, is preparing WBC middleweight (160 pounds) king Sergio Martinez for a March 12 bout against unbeaten WBO junior middleweight (154 pounds) titlist Sergei Dzinziruk.

But Sarmiento also took shots at eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao, owner of the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and WBC junior middleweight belts, and WBA junior middleweight belt-holder Miguel Cotto.

In Top Rank Promotions events, Pacquiao will defend his WBO belt against Shane Mosley in an HBO pay per view televised event on May 7, and, Cotto will do the same with his WBA crown opposite Ricardo Mayorga in a Showtime pay per view show on March 12.

Mexico’s 20-year-old Saul Alvarez will return to the ring on March 5, perhaps in Los Angeles, and, potentially against WBA welterweight (147 pounds) champ Vyacheslav Senchenko, according to Golden Boy Promotions’ CEO, Richard Schaefer.

Eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) will defend his WBO welterweight belt against three-division, five-time champion, Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) on May 7 in an HBO pay per view televised, Top Rank Promotions bout from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where Pacquiao’s WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown will not be on the line.

There is also 24-year-old junior middleweight and middleweight (160 pounds) prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (40-0-1, 30 KOs), the Mexican-born, son of the former world champion by the same name against whom a bout with Alvarez would be a massive promotion.

“Obviously, in the future, that would be a very big fight,” said Alvarez, who has fought on American soil four times. “If we both keep winning and we keep getting better, it could be a very big, very good fight.”

Golden Boy Promotions’ President and former world champion, Oscar De La Hoya, has praised Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KOs) as the next big star out of Mexico, and one whose potential goes far beyond defeating Senchenko (31-0, 20 KOs).

Alvarez has been compared favorably to Mexican greats such as 37-year-old WBO and WBA lightweight (135 pounds) titlist Juan Manuel Marquez (51–5-1, 38 KOs), come-backing, 34-year-old former three-time world champion, Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KOs), and 36-year-old, five-time, three-division champion, Marco Antonio Barrera (66-7, 43 KOs).

Marquez is widely considered to be the country’s premiere boxer. Morales is the last man to beat Pacquiao, who is promoted by Top Rank Promotions. Morales has an eye toward a showdown opposite Marquez. Morales lost two out of three fights in a trilogy with Barrera whose legendary status, for Mexicans, rivals the one between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

A winner of 31 consecutive fights during a run that has included 11 knockouts in the past 13 bouts, Alvarez was asked by FanHouse how he would do against Pacquiao.

“What I would have to work on is to be fast. I might not be as fast as him, but I would have to be fast as well. Basically, styles make fights,” said Alvarez.

“So Manny Pacquiao’s very fast against a guy who stands right in front of him,” said Alvarez. “But if you give him angles and box him, he doesn’t look quite as fast.”

GRAPEVINE, Texas — Unbeaten Cuban-born southpaw and two-time former Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (pictured above, at left) will be attempting to earn a world title in only his seventh professional fight on Saturday night when he meets Panamanian southpaw featherweight Ricardo Cordoba (pictured above, at right) in an HBO pay per view televised, Top Rank Promotions card at The Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Rigondeaux (6-0, five knockouts), who has been competing as a super bantamweight (122 pounds) until now, is taking on Cordoba (37-2-2, 23 KOs) at 126 pounds on the under card of a junior middleweight (154 pounds) championship main event featuring WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) and former titlist Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC crown.

If Rigondeaux is successful against Cordoba, he will eclipse the boxing record established by Leon Spinks, who was 7-0-1, with five knockouts after dethroning Muhammad Ali for the WBC and WBA heavyweight crowns in his eighth professional fight in February of 1978.

“I want to break Leon Spinks’ record. This is is a great opportunity to be on a stage like this. I know that after Saturday night, I’ll be able to position myself to have a lot more big stages to fight in,” said Rigondeaux.

“I’m extremely happy about this fight and I’m ready for it. I’ve taken my training very seriously for this fight, and I’m in tremendous condition,” said Rigondeaux. “I want to go out here and make the best of it and win this fight in spectacular fashion.”

A victory over Cordoba could enter Rigondeaux into the featherweight sweepstakes that include WBO king Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27 KOs), of Puerto Rico, Cuban-born, former Olympic gold medalist and WBA champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 15 KOs) and contender Miguel “Mikey” Angel Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs), according to Top Rank Promotions’ CEO, Bob Arum.

“I think that with Rigondeaux, and Gamboa, and with Lopez and Mikey Garcia, Rigondeaux will be a great featherweight — and you’re talking about an era of unbelievable featherweight fighters,” Arum told FanHouse recently.

“You know, who knows? I’m looking for Pacquiao-Margarito to be a memorable slugfest and a fight that’s going to be the fight of the year,” said Arum. “So, with that in mind, I think that it would be hard for Rigondeaux to steal the show.”
