Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, quipped on Saturday that he has annointed former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins as his “mashgiach” for black fighters, and, the man who will determine whether or not the next Manny Pacquiao opponent is truly “kosher” as an African American boxer.

Within the Jewish religion, a mashgiach is a rabbi who certifies whether or not a food is kosher, or, edible, for those who practice orthodox Judaism.

“If it’s not kosher, orthodox jews will not eat that food,” said Arum, who is Jewish, but not an orthodox Jew. “So I have designated that Bernard is our mashgiach for picking our next African American opponent for Manny Pacquiao. We’ll fight whomever he picks.”

Eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao told the ABS CBN News recently that he is not “cherry picking” his opponents in response to former undisputed champion Bernard Hopkins’ assertion to FanHouse that Pacquiao never has faced a top notch African American fighter.

Already the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) titlist, the 31-year-old Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) added the WBC’s vacant junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown with a Nov. 13, unanimous decision over Mexican-born Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs), marking his 13th straight victory during a run that includes eight knockouts.

Pacquiao has been given the nickname “The Mexicutioner” for his dominance of opponents from south of the border, but Hopkins pointed out that he never has faced an American-born black fighter.
