The gloves are for both hands and face. Think about a someones knukles. Some are sharp and boney which cut and gash faces easily. Some are wide and have lots of muscle around them which the fist covers more surface area softening the blow a bit but the powers still there. The gloves cushion the blow to prevent broken bones, gashes to the face and the punchers hands in my opinion. just imagine boxer or any fighter fighting with bareknukles. For EX. Kimbo look at his opponents on his old vids

Whats been up man? well like a few other pointed out , they are smaller because the hands are not used nearly as much as they are in Boxing (12 rounds non stop punching) Thus, smaller gloves are ok along without the thumbs so that they can do certain locks along with using there thumbs to help get out of locks. Just my 2cents

Boxing is punching for 12 rounds MMA is usually shorter and is not only about he hands like boxing
With gloves you see to a larger degree the skill ,resistance,strategy,technical talent,the heart and you get to see more convincingly who is the winner and the better fighter over 12rounds.Boxing is the best combat sport period,FUCK THE MMA,those fudge packers can roll around the mat all they want in their little spandex shorts.
buddhappy, this is totally off subject but the internet is going crazy about the rumors that arum and cotto are in a serious beef. i heard arum saying that cotto seems like the weak minded type that wouldnt be able to bounce back after suffering his 1st loss. and cotto feels disrespected about arums undeniable support for marg .what are your thoughts? make a video about this subject
It is for the hands,Also to protect from blinding risk with eye pokes ect.
if you look at it like this. you need the like that to grapple yes? but also in MMA the maount of punches compared to those of boxing, to the head alone, are nothing in wehn you compared them. boxing gloves make you able to hit harder and for long. bad for long term health!
thats really why i put the question to buddhaphy. its intresting! using gloves allows u to, throw more punches, punch harder and longer, reduces the damage to the face. BUT if u DO use gloves because ur throwing more and harder your being hit more. this then causes brain trauma problems and “punchdrunk” in later life. were the brain has been battered about the skull SO much. withouth gloves. it hurts more, ur hands break easier, more damage once hit, pick ur punches more. MORE died using gloves!

the open fingered gloves in mma are used for the grappling aspect of the sport

without gloves there will be less punching. Fighters will hestitate to throw punches due to risk of injury.

What’s up Buddha? I know you’re not a big fan but in regards to the topic, what’s your opinion in relation to MMA gloves which are much smaller, leading to less protection to both the hands and face.
the gloves are nesessary because they are viewed as safety equipment. boxers career’w will be alot shorter and brutaler without them.
